juneteenth notable figures

Renowned as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," this activist and NJOF board member campaigned relentlessly, famously walking from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., to secure federal recognition. Reflecting on the historic 2021 signing, she stated: "Now we can celebrate freedom from the 19th of June to the 4th of July!"

A physician, minister, and civil rights leader, Dr. Myers founded the NJOF in 1994 and is celebrated as the father of the modern Juneteenth movement. He spent decades lobbying Congress and uniting communities nationwide under his inspiring vision: "Together we will see Juneteenth become a national day of observance in America!"
